Emergent Semantics Systems
نویسنده
چکیده
With “peer production” becoming commonplace and new standards like RDF or OWL paving the way for the much anticipated semantic web, a new breed of very large scale semantic systems is about to appear. Traditional semantic reconciliation methods, dependent upon shared vocabularies or global ontologies, cannot be used in such open and dynamic environments. Instead, new heuristics based on emerging properties and local consensuses have to be exploited in order to foster semantic interoperability in the large. In this paper, we outline the main differences between traditional semantic reconciliation methods and these new heuristics. Also, we characterize the resulting emergent semantics systems and provide a couple of hints vis-à-vis their potential

Fault-tolerant Emergent Semantics in P2p Networks
To survive in the twenty-first century, enterprises need to collaborate. Collaboration at the enterprise-level presupposes the interoperability of the underlying information systems. Access to heterogeneous information sources must be provided transparently while maintaining their autonomy. Further, the availability of nearly unlimited information calls for efficient and precise information ret...
متن کاملMobile Automata with External Semantics
Mobile automaton (MA) systems are presented as a formal model for emergent behavior in multi-agent systems. A MA system is a group of finite-state transducers moving about, reading, and writing to a shared grid environment. The MAs in a system may be either homogeneous or heterogeneous, and their concurrent system computations may be either synchronous or asynchronous. There is no message-passi...
متن کاملViewpoints on Emergent Semantics
We introduce a novel view on how to deal with the problems of semantic interoperability in distributed systems. This view is based on the concept of emergent semantics, which sees both the representation of semantics and the discovery of the proper interpretation of symbols as the result of a self-organizing process performed by distributed agents exchanging symbols and having utilities depende...
متن کاملFrom Folksologies to Ontologies: How the Twain Meet
Ontologies are instruments for capturing and using formal semantics, and are often the result of a "central committee controlled" style of working. A new trend on the Web is the increasing popularity of folksologies in the form of social bookmarking sites. Folksologies provide informal semantics and can be created and adopted by anybody anytime anywhere on the Internet. Shared meaning in a folk...
متن کاملEmergent Semantics in Distributed Knowledge Management
Organizations and enterprises have developed complex data and information exchange systems that are now vital for their daily operations. Currently available systems, however, face a major challenge. On todays global information infrastructure, data semantics is more and more contextand time-dependent, and cannot be fixed once and for all at design time. Identifying emerging relationships among...
متن کاملEmergent Semantics in BibSonomy
Social bookmark tools are rapidly emerging on the Web. In such systems users are setting up lightweight conceptual structures called folksonomies. The reason for their immediate success is the fact that no specific skills are needed for participating. In this paper we specify a formal model for folksonomies, briefly describe our own system BibSonomy, which allows for sharing both bookmarks and ...
